Best way to communicate with OTR drivers during long hauls

Sever3

Question

Hey , I’m looking for effective ways to keep in touch with our drivers during long hauls. We’ve tried a few methods, but I’m curious to hear what’s working best for others. How do you ensure reliable and clear communication over long distances?

For us, a combination of mobile apps and traditional CB radios works well. The apps, like Fleet Complete or KeepTruckin, offer real-time updates and allow for sending detailed messages. CB radios are great for instant communication, especially in areas with spotty cell service. Also, setting up regular check-in times can help ensure that you’re always in the loop.

We rely heavily on GPS-enabled communication devices that provide both tracking and messaging capabilities. It’s crucial to have a system where drivers can easily update their status or report issues. Additionally, having a dedicated dispatcher for long hauls ensures that someone is always available to address any concerns promptly. Keeping the communication lines open and responsive makes a big difference.

In our company, we use satellite communication devices for areas with poor cell coverage. These have been a lifesaver for keeping in touch in remote regions. Also, we have a policy of sending detailed daily itineraries via email or the communication app, so drivers always know what to expect and whom to contact in case of any issues. It’s all about planning and redundancy.
